READING PASSAGE 3
You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 28-40, which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.
Psychology Case Study: “Give and Take”, a strategy employed by Harry Potter, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Revenge.
Similar writing techniques can be found in thousands of fictions and movies in the world. Sometimes writers and authors use identical and familiar patterns so that they can retain a certain number of viewers and audiences. Sometimes they do this is because it is just a part of our lives and we simply cannot live without it. As a saying goes, drama is life and life is drama. It is through portrayal of the similar patterns of life that we finally grasp the meaning of life. One of the arrangement is”life is all about give and take”, as can be seen in many famous works, such as Harry Potter, the Goblet of fire, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and U.S. famous sitcom, Revenge. You certainly cannot underestimate the power of” give and take”. Even several bestsellers discuss this phenomenon, such as Give and Take and Rich Dad Poor Dad. “Give and you shall receive”. Let’s take a look at how it is used in both eastern and western fictions.
In one of the popular U.S. sitcoms, Revenge, we can also find the traces of “give and take” in several scenes. The heroine Emily Thornes is actual Amanda Clarke. She comes to the town of the Hamptons to get revenge on those who wronged her farther, so she exchanges her name and acts as Emily Thornes. Her first step is to buy the beach house, actually her childhood house. The beach house is belonged to Michael and Lydia. Lydia is cheating on Michael, so according to the prenup, she will get nothing in the divorce. But the point is there are multiple people eyeing on the beach house, according to another heroine, Victoria Grayson.
During the bidding war, what Emily does not know is that Victoria outbids her at a cash offering, and Nolan outbids Victoria. Things progress to a surprising end. The deed of the house is already in Emily’s name. According to Nolan Ross, he wants to return the favor that Emily’s father once did to him. Her father, David was the one who believed in him so that Nolan could start a successful company. However, Nolan gets himself in a very big trouble in the very end of season two. In the opening of season three, Nolan is released out of the jail and gets picked up by Emily, who drives him to a great mansion, saying that the house is his. She feels that it is the right thing to do. She is just returning the favor to Nolan Ross.
In Harry Potter, The Goblet of Fire, three tasks will be given to those champions. Harry is not qualified to attend the contest, but his name is unusually in the goblet of fire. Harry has already known the first task is dragons. Perhaps due to the fact that Harry has a kind heart or Harry is a giver, he informs the only champion who does not know that the first task is dragons. Givers are the ones who help other without thinking too much or whether they will get something in return.
According to the bestseller Give and Take, there are three types, takers, givers and matchers. Matchers are the ones who are in the middle. They value a fair return. Takers are the ones who take the most, and it is assumed that takers should be the ones who win the most. Contrary to what readers might think, givers are actually ultimate winner, since others are benefited by them before. They are willing to return the favors to givers. As the story progresses, Harry has a hard time figuring out the second task. Cedric says to Harry” I owe you one for telling me about the dragons.” He is returning the favor to Harry.
In The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the portrayal of give-and-take can also be found in the relationship between Guan Yu and Cao Cao. Guan Yu is such a great warrior that even Cao Cao really appreciates him. Guan Yu even has something that Lu Bu clearly lacks. Guan Yu is a man of integrity and loyalty, whereas Lu Bu is a womanizer who also betrays his godfather Ding Yang. Because of this, Cao Cao wants him even more. He tries his best to please Guan Yu. He gives him lots of treasures and Red Hare, the kind of horse that every warrior wants. Dong Zhuo once uses Rad Hare to woo Lu Bu. Loyalty earns the appreciation and trust from Cao Cao, whereas disloyalty makes Lu Bu beheaded. Guan Yu’s loyalty makes him leave the camp of Cao Cao once treated him, but he appreciate how Cao Cao once treated him. Guan Yu leaves with all the gifts returned to Cao Cao and is forgiven by Cao Cao even though he slays six generals of Cao Cao en route at five passes.
As the story progresses to Huarong where the fate of Cao Cao is doomed, Kong Ming knows beforehand that Guan Yu will eventually set Cao Cao free. Kong Ming and Liu Bei already have an understanding that is actually the time for Guan Yu to return the favor once given by Cao Cao.
All three great works have all been linked to give-and-take. Perhaps as a human being, it is just a part of our life, and sometimes there are reasons for certain arrangements in those works.
