‘’Movies tell us a lot about the country where they were produced. Name a movie and explain what you have learned about the country by watching it. ‘’ Use specific details and examples to support your choice.
Movies certainly enlighten us in many ways, broadening our horizon and allowing us to learn about countries we have never been to. I would draw on the movie, ‘’3 idiot’’, to explain what I learned about current India society, particularly about inequality and the clash between traditional and new thoughts.
Inequality and traditional seem to be interwined in India as two sides of the same coin, which can be analyzed in two aspects: gender roles and social hierarchy. First, regarding gender roles, the movie emphasizes that males and females carry conventional expectations. Sons must pursue degrees that guarantee them prestigious jobs, while daughters must honor their parents by marrying richer men. For instance, two of the three major male characters study Engineering because of their parents’ expectations. However women face more inequality than men, as a female medical student in the film suggests that when it comes to marriage, family honor precedes a women’s individuality. Nonetheless, there is hope for younger generation’s defiance against traditional, as the male characters insist on pursuing their dreams, and the female character flees from her own wedding.
Secondly, traditional social hierarchy, namely the caste system, still exerts enormous influence, as suggested by the story of protagonist, Rancho, who conceal his true identity as an orphaned servant and is hired by his employer to acquire a degree in his son’s name. Despite having devoted 4 years to attain the degree, he cannot claim the degree under his real name. Fortunately, the happy ending for Rancho teaches us that the underprivileged can turn the tables by utilizing their knowledge.
Undeniably, traditional might be difficult to break, but the contemporary Indian society is changing. The movie conveys an important massage that the younger generation in India can indeed break the shackles of traditional.
